The Holbrook Community Foundation has been formed to keep Holbrook's working as a historic waterfront property that has contributed to the economy and diversity of Harpswell, Maine.
The Foundation raised 1.5 million to purchase and repair the wharf, snack bar, store, and 1860s house. The property is managed as working waterfront and be self-sustaining once major renovations have been completed. Ownership by the Holbrook Community Foundation has guaranteed permanent protection and public access. Any net earnings will be used to support other nonprofit community organizations-such as volunteer fire and rescue, library and local scholarships.
- The commercial fishing wharf continues generate jobs and income locally.
- The restaurant will provide jobs in the summer and continue to entice visitors to Harpswell by land and sea.
- The store will provide needed services and jobs and re-establish an age old vilage meeting place.
- The Holbrook house will provide much-needed rental housing. Although nonprofit, the Foundation will continue to pay real estate taxes on the property.
The State supports Holbrook's as a model of working waterfront and encourages application to the Working Waterfront Access Pilot Program for matching grants, doubling the value of local gifts. The Trust for Public Land (TPL), a nonprofit conservation organization, is our partner and fiscal agent. All donations should be sent to TPL until the Holbrook Community Foundation receives nonprofit status.
Harpswell's challenge to maintain Holbrook's as working waterfront is a challenge that other fishing waterfronts face in town and state-wide. If it's important to you to preserve the character of a way of life in Maine, please help KEEP HOLBROOK'S WORKING!
